So many men are extremely close to dressing amazingly and crushing it stylistically. Unfortunately, minor mistakes still destroy their look and style. I want to go over some ways that grown men dress wrongly.
- Short sleeve length. When you get this wrong, your arms will look shorter and smaller. Short sleeves should hit midway down from your armpit to your elbow so some triceps are exposed.
- Shirt length. An untucked shirt needs to hit about mid-crotch. If it covers the majority of your crotch or the entire crotch, the shirt is way too long. Get it tailored or size down. You don’t want it too high because your upper body will look tiny.
- Impartial tuck. Don’t jam your shirt straight down the center of your pants. This is a bad partial tuck, and it looks like you did it on purpose. Aim for a belt loop to make it look like it happened by accident, then make sure it casually hangs and the belt is exposed. It looks best when wearing a belt.
- Belts and shoes. First, ensure your belt is not super beat up or worn out. Your leather belt should also match your shoes’ texture and color. There’s more flexibility regarding sneakers matching your belts.
- Monochromatic black looks dark and mysterious, but some men hesitate to wear it. It is rugged and sexy, and you can pull off this look with a black T-shirt, a blacked-out Anson Belt, a pair of black pants, and black suede sneakers. Elevate the style by changing out the belt. Some belts don’t have holes, so you don’t have to worry about them being beaten up and worn out. It works with micro-adjustments on a track system.
- Muffin top. Having a muffin top is an instant style killer. You could look smooth, but your style is destroyed if your shirt pops out and you look like a can of biscuits. Make sure your shirt isn’t cut like a big and baggy box. The more tailored, the better. Also, an appropriately sized belt will help keep your shirt tucked. Shirt garters are uncomfortable, and the military tuck is only needed if you wear an oversized, baggy shirt. A slim-fit shirt should do the trick.
- Popping pockets. Pocket flare kills your style and says your booty is too big, your package is too big, or either one of those things. Popping pockets will distort the fit of your pants. A simple solution is to size up or try different styles or fits of your pants or jeans.
- Denim. When wearing different pieces of denim, make sure they are not too close in color. Your denim jackets to denim shirts to jeans need to have a bit more contrast. Don’t wear light-colored jeans in the winter. Also, it’s impossible to dress up casual jeans. Jeans come in many colors and washes, ranging from non-destressed to dark blue to black. The more whiskering and distressing, the more casual of an option as well. These are the jeans you don’t want to dress up with shiny shoes for sports coats.
- Unbuttoning. I recommend three buttons as the magic sexiest number. If you have a huge chest, perhaps trim that back. However, unbutton two buttons at a minimum. If you only unbutton one button, you look like a dork.
- Sleeve rolls. Don’t have a half-ass, sloppy roll that looks worn out and hanging. You want a clean and crisp roll. Check out my demonstration in the video. It’s simple and easy, and it looks a million times better.
- Button-up shirts. Many men are wearing these improperly. Make sure the shirt does not come back down past your crotch. You cannot wear these untucked, as these shirts are designed to stay tucked in. If you want to wear one untucked, purchase a casual button-up that is meant to be worn untucked.
- Collar size and tie thickness are sometimes not appropriately coordinated. If you wear a more substantial collar, you want to ensure your tie is thick.
- Fun socks. Never wear fun socks. Your socks should also match your pants. If you want a bit of pinstripe, that’s fine, but any fun socks are a no-go.
- Suit Accessories. Only one fold is acceptable, and that is the presidential fold. It’s straight across. Trying to do a big puffy look looks stupid. Cufflinks are okay, and a tie bar works, but all of the lapel stuff, like flowers, bling, and pens, is overkill. Keep your look clean and simple.
- No-Go Shoes. Do not wear Hey Dude shoes, boat shoes, Tom’s, Uggs, or any other big and bulky shoes. Additionally, don’t wear shoes that are too pointy or too square. Make sure your shoes are leather as well. Other than that, make sure they’re clean and in style.
