How to PROPERLY Dress Up Jeans {MOST MEN GET THIS WRONG}

October 8, 2024
Today is a denim-wearing tutorial where I will discuss and show you how to elevate your aesthetic by dressing up your favorite jeans. Denim is amazing, and every guy needs to know how to dress it up properly. Don’t look like your weird Uncle Berry, who doesn’t do well, but Mom thinks it’s handsome.

Denim appropriate to dress up

Not all jeans are created equal and come in different colors, fits, fabrics, and distressing. Stay away from overly distressed denim and overly loose or baggy jeans because they are impossible to dress up and don’t look good dressed up either. You should also avoid raw or salvage denim because it’s too rigid of fabric to look proper when dressing up. Look for smooth and sexy casual jeans that pair well with sneakers, boots, or other casual footwear.

Simple dark wash, non-distressed jeans are the easiest dress-up option. Gray jeans also look amazing when dressed up. Ensure the fit is right and there is not a lot of whiskering or distressing. The indigo color is another great option but a bit more casual. It’s softer and more playful, but you can also dress it up because the color is consistent without distressing. White jeans can be dressed up in the summertime. In the fall season, you should avoid white. Black is also a type of denim that can be dressed up.

When dressing up denim, make sure the fit is slim or straight. You don’t want it to be too big or baggy, and you also don’t want it to be skin-tight. The length should be a proper length so that there’s no bunching or puddling by your ankle. Make sure your jeans also fit your booty. It’s literally impossible to dress up saggy pants, so they need to fit.

Level Up

Once you nail down these elements, the other pieces aren’t as complicated. A simple and quick way to dress up denim in a casual setting is with sneakers and a t-shirt. Then, throw a suede bomber on top. It instantly elevates the look.

Another option is to throw on a nice jacket or outerwear, such as a driving jacket or pea coat. A navy pea coat instantly dresses up the jeans. If you’re wearing a more casual look, wear a nicer jacket to elevate the aesthetic instantly. It keeps it casual cool. A field jacket is also a great option that quickly elevates the aesthetic but is a little more casual. Throwing on a sports coat or a suit jacket looks bad, in my opinion, when you wear it with jeans and sneakers.

The cardigan sweater is another great outerwear option to elevate the aesthetic with sneakers and denim instantly

Next Level

Changing out the sneakers for brown loafers and wearing medium-wash denim with a white polo elevates the aesthetic to the next level. The cardigan sweater with the outfit is absolute perfection.

Change out the cardigan for a sports coat, but do not wear your suit jacket with jeans because it looks like a suit jacket. You want a blazer that is less constructed and more casual. I’m wearing a Maverick Blazer, which can be worn with slacks or chinos.

Changing out the white polo for a black polo and then changing to black jeans and black loafers is a clean, simple, and sexy combination. Throw on a camel-colored jacket or another cool badass jacket to take it to another level.

Sweaters can change the aesthetic of jeans as long as you combine them properly with the right shoes and boots. I returned to my medium-wash denim and combined it with a cable knit turtleneck sweater. Adding a pair of black Chelsea boots dresses up the outfit. Boots and jeans go together perfectly, and if I wear jeans in the winter, I will rock boots with them. They look amazing, whether Chukka or Chelsea boots, and suede adds richness and texture to the denim. Switching out the turtleneck for a v-neck sweater is also an amazing option.

Long-sleeve polos are a devastatingly perfect option for dressing up jeans. I could have chosen loafers or boots but opted for suede sneakers with a brown sole instead. They work really well with this outfit.

White button-downs and sports coats with jeans are a classic look but always opt for a solid white, black, or navy shirt. Patterns are a bit tricky if you’re going to be pairing the outfit with a jacket. If you want a patterned button-down, opt for a solid jacket, making matching easy. Conversely, you could try a heavy textured sports coat with interesting patterns or textures combined with a simple white button-up shirt and jeans. Also, stylish loafers paired with that outfit is a great option. Avoid wearing sneakers; instead, wear loafers or a dressy Chelsea boot.
