How to Pick the Best Hairstyle for Your Jawline

Take a selfie, open a drawing or painting app, and trace your chin. I want to help you choose the proper hairstyle based on your jaw shape. Many videos discuss face shape and hairstyle, but the optimal choice depends on your jawline. Face shape is not that great when choosing a hairstyle because facial hair will change the proportion of your face. I will also review tips and tricks to choose the best hairstyle for three jaw shapes.

Angular. Softening the angles is the key to a proper hairstyle for this jaw shape. Anything too tight on the sides or too structured on top will look weird. Go with something softer, such as swept-over bangs or a bro flow. A light fringe in the front to soften and balance the angle of the jaw looks amazing. A shaved head, buzz cut, or crew cut also looks amazing with angular jaws. It’s all about contrast and balance. By buzzing off your hair or taking it super low, you’re highlighting the roundness of the upper portion of your head, which is the opposite of the angularity of your jaw.

Round. If your jaw is soft or your beard is bushy, by buzzing your head, you’ll accentuate the roundness and softness of your jaw. Instead, you need something more angular to create the illusion of length, angles, and structure. You want the hair off of your face, if possible. Sweeping it to the side with a bit of fringe is a great way to add a bit of symmetry to the upper portion of your head, improving the bottom half of the face. A side part is also an amazing option. You want to ensure it’s not too tight to your head so no slickdowns that would accentuate the jaw’s roundness and weakness. A modern mullet is another amazing style for weaker jaws because of the tight sides, more substance up top, and cascading hair to elongate the profile.

Square. To maximize the facial aesthetic, offset the strength of the jaw with a hairstyle that is softer on top. Look for hairstyles such as a messy fringe or flow. A swept-over side part with a little bang up front or some fringe is amazing. The modern mullet will also look fantastic—shorter on top, a little longer in the back, and tight on the sides.

Use Texture Powder by Pete & Pedro to add weightless volume. It adds texture so your hair doesn’t look so flat and boring. Even with longer hair, it adds volume and texture without hair getting weighted down. I use it in conjunction with Sea SALT Spray and Putty
