Prior to going to bed….

  • Take a warm shower — your body heats up, your blood vessels dilate, inner heat will radiate, and your inner core temperature drops indicating it’s time for sleep.
  • Sleep in a room that’s 65 degrees — the cooler setting will help your body temperature to drop which facilitates the process of falling asleep and your body will be able to cool off even if you sleep under blankets or in PJs.
  • Sleep in a dark room — use black-out blinds or curtains to sleep faster and deeper.
  • Remove the alarm clock — you won’t be able to look at it through the night which can increase your stress levels. Use your cell phone as the alarm instead by placing it face down on the other side of the room. You can’t reach it if it’s on the other side of the room which the ambient light from the cell phone can interfere with your circadian rhythms.
  • Get outside in the sunshine 30-minutes per day.

  • Decompress and unwind for 20-30 minutes before going to bed — reading a book (not the computer or cell phone) is highly recommended. Make sure not to exercise 2-3 hours prior to going to bed.

Two Minute Technique

The technique was developed by the military and is a relaxation technique. If you do it enough and practice, you’ll get really good at falling asleep really fast. Here’s how: lie incredible still. Start with consciously relaxing the muscles in your body, starting with your face. Systematically focus on each body part from your head down to your feet. Feel the tension melting away by putting yourself into a tranquil state. Thereafter, think of calming thoughts such as being on a boat on the lake. Alpha likes to repeat to himself, “Don’t think. Don’t think.”
